Pet Care Specialists
Who is, "More Than Pets?"
We like to think of ourselves as a small community of pet care specialists. Lorelei Moon / Loree Monohon has spent more than 25 years caring for a wide variety of animals in the SF Bay Area. In 1996, she and her associate, Tammy Patterson started providing service in the bay area as a team under the name, Dog and Cat Nannies; Etc., Etc., Etc…
In 2000, Lorelei changed the name to, More Than Pets: Pet-sitting & More. In the past few years we have added a handful of experienced pet care providers to our network. Lorelei has skills that go beyond those of the usual pet sitter after working as a veterinary assistant for many years. She has a soft spot for geriatric and “special needs” pets and a passion for helping humans better understand the animals they share their lives with! More Than Pets, care providers are experienced with cats, dogs, small mammals, birds, livestock and more exotic pets. You can read more HERE.

Will I always have the same person taking care of my pets?
Usually, yes.
Usually, yes.
What if Lorelei, or my regular sitter isn’t available to take care of my pet or if an emergency comes up and she can’t come?
If there is a scheduling conflict and your regular provider is unavailable, we will let you know and you will be able to meet that person in advance.
There will always be a trusted associate who will have access to Lorelei’s itinerary and can make sure your pets are taken care of if something unfortunate happens. This person will also be able to contact you and/or any emergency contacts you have. Having several providers available ensures that in the case of incapacitation or an emergency, your pets will still receive excellent care. You will, of course be contacted if this happens.

Services
What does a regular service visit entail?
Visits are customized to include the basic things your pet and home need on a daily basis. We try to keep your pet’s regular routine as much as possible. We feed and water your pet, scoop litter-boxes and take care of basic pet clean up. We provide stimulation by exercising or playing with your pet, brushing, petting, and keeping them company. We can reinforce training too.
We’ll bring in your mail and paper, take care of house plants, rotate lights and raise and lower blinds. Some clients may ask us to move or start their car. In most cases we will take out the trash or recycling and bring the bins in again.
A minimum drop in visit is considered to be 20-30 minutes long but we usually spend much more time. Your pet’s comfort and happiness is the most important thing!
If your pet needs more than one visit a day that can be arranged. House-sitting will add to the security and “lived in” look of your home. In most cases, it also makes your pet feel more relaxed.
An overnight visit includes whatever care is needed for pet and home from evening (usually dinner-time) until morning. We do not reduce the rate if asked to arrive later in the evening and we charge an additional amount for extra tasks like midday visits, usually a little less than the regular drop in rate. If you are returning late on the final day and require a dinner visit or additional time, a rate can be worked out.
It’s your house and your pet(s)! Please don’t hesitate to ask questions or make requests. Your wishes your comfort and your privacy are of utmost importance!

What else can you do during a visit?
We customize a visit and fees based on the needs of you and your pet.
We can administer medications, give your pet a massage, trim their nails and sometimes we do grooming. We can help with behavioral issues, training, pet nutrition, make observations and advise. We can do extensive watering or specialty plant care, cage or litter-box cleaning (above and beyond scooping) and remove feces from the yard.
We also can pick up supplies, take pets to grooming or vet visits. We can also make and host memory pages dedicated to your pets or a memorial page for beloved pets who have passed that you can visit and your friends can leave messages on. We do not charge for memorial pages for established clients. HERE is an example.
Do you provide any additional services other than pet/house-sitting?
We really do “more than pets!” We can drop off and pick up clients, do miscellaneous household or personal tasks, run errands, We also do personal/home organizing, light housekeeping and some more artistic ventures. You can read more about the, "more" in More Than Pets HERE.

How often do you make visits? Would you be willing to come every other day?
We prefer to come every day. Some clients try to save money by spreading out the visits. Keep in mind that if your pet does get into trouble you'll want help to arrive sooner rather than later.
We also prefer not to share responsibilities with a friend or family member. In most cases it means more work and more responsibility for the pet-sitter.

Will you give me updates while I am away?
We will often check in with texts, emails or photos. Let us know if you would like regular updates and your preferred method. We will also leave a note letting you know how things went. Sometimes your pet will get creative and leave you a note.

Can I request that you come at a particular time of day?
Yes, but we prefer a window. We do our best to honor the time and routine preferences of each client. We are usually able to get there when you would like us to. However, the more flexible your visit window, the more quality time we can set aside for your pet.
During the course of a day we may be caring for many different animals and properties. Unpredictable things come up that make it difficult to comply with a rigid schedule request. We give consideration for pets with medical needs, elderly animals, and animals that need to be taken outside to relieve themselves. Please make us aware of any special needs your pet may have.

Do you work on holidays?
Yes, of course we work on holidays! That’s the time most people need us! If you have house-sitting requests during the holidays, make them as soon as possible as the schedule often fills up months in advance. Holiday bookings are non-refundable. We usually limit the number of bookings we take on these days and charge a little more.
The following days/periods are generally considered “holidays” as in especially busy times for us: New Years Day, Valentine’s Day, Presidents’ Day, Easter, Passover, Spring Break, March 10th, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Burning Man, Labor Day, Rosh Hashanah-Yom Kippur, Veteran’s Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve.

Do you offer pet boarding?
In most cases we care for your pet in your home. We have on occasion had dogs and caged pets at our house as boarders, but it’s rare. Boarding is done on a case by case basis and the fee varies.

FEES
How much does your service cost and what about extra charges?
We try to keep our costs competitive and reasonable. We generally find that our rates are a little lower than the average pet care provider with our skill set and experience.
Charges are for on each drop in visit or overnight, not per day.
Our drop in visit starts at $45 and goes up. Our standard overnight ranges from $90 to about $150 depending on what the job entails, distance and the number of animals. This charge is subject to change and varies depending on what the job details. You can read more about our rates HERE.
We usually charge more for multiple pets and may charge more for additional work that requires more time or skill. We charge more for excessive clean up. Sometimes pets bring dead creatures into a house. Clean up and disposal of vermin is subject to a fee! We may charge more if you live in certain locations due to mileage. If we need to pick up supplies, food, make vet or other visits without prior arrangement our minimum fee in addition to cost of item or service is $35. It is at your pet-sitter's discretion to waive or reduce this fee.
*Extra fees may be temporary depending on need.

Should I tip my pet-sitter?
Tips are gladly accepted, but never expected. We’re always happy to have our hard work acknowledged with a thank you or something extra. Many of our clients add on gratuities or leave us treats or gifts to show appreciation.

Requesting Service
How do I make a service request?
As much advance notice as you can give is always appreciated.
You can make a request 24 hours a day:
Always let us know the best ways and times to reach you and the dates you need service. We will usually get back to you within 24 hours, but it may take a little longer. If we know we can text or email you the response will be even quicker!

What if I want to take a trip, but I don't have exact dates?
If you think you might be taking a trip and want to make sure your pet care is covered let us know ASAP. We’ll "pencil you in" and then let you know if someone else inquires about your dates. If you say you aren't sure, we won’t consider it firm until you tell us.
If you want a guarantee, we may ask for a deposit.

What about trip confirmation?
We text, call or email before every job so if you don’t hear from us within 24 hours of leaving, make sure to call us.
There have been a few occasions when clients have given us the wrong dates or couples who each thought their partner had requested service. Usually we are able to catch this when you follow the confirmation routine. Humans can make mistakes and pets shouldn’t have to pay the price!

What if I have to come back early?
If your trip is cut short, please text or call us as soon as possible 510-967-6701 so we can adjust our schedule accordingly.
If we are house-sitting please give us as much notice as possible so we’ll have a chance to pack our personal items and be out of the way before you arrive.

What if I need to cancel and do you give refunds?
We essentially have a No Refund policy. If you have to cancel or shorten a reserved trip please give us as much notice as possible.
Keep in mind that once we put your dates on our schedule, we have made a full commitment to you and your pets. We may limit the number of overall bookings so your pet can get the best care possible. Obviously we can only house-sit one place at a time. Once you request service we will turn down other business requests. When you have a reservation we won’t drop you for a “nicer” job or one that pays more money so we expect you to keep your commitment.
*However, if we are able to replace the cancelled booking we won’t charge you. Otherwise we rarely give refunds or credits.

Home Again
What should I do when I return from a trip?
Even if you return in the middle of the night make sure to send a text or leave a message at 510-967-6701.
We do not consider the job finished until we know you are home safe! If we can’t verify you’ve come home we’ll wait a reasonable amount of time then continue coming and we’ll charge you!

What about feedback? Should I let you know how things went?
It’s important to us that you are happy with the service you receive so please let us know if there’s something we did that you appreciated!
It also helps to know if there’s something we could do better! Don’t hesitate to tell us if you want us to do something differently!

Do you need to keep my key?
It’s usually easier for all concerned to let us keep a copy of your keys. They are securely stored and are labeled with your pet's name only so they would be useless if stolen. It takes valuable time to arrange pick-up and delivery each time and if an emergency or last minute trip comes up it may be difficult to accomplish this.
*If you would like the key picked up and returned with each service it is an additional $20 each way.
We will not drop a key in your mail slot or leave it in your house unless we know you have returned home from your trip.

Security
What about security and privacy?
We are extremely cautious about security/privacy.
Let us know if there are neighbors you’re comfortable with us talking to. We do recommend you tell trusted neighbors and your alarm company when we will be coming and let us know who knows. If friends, family or workers will be on the premises make sure we’re informed otherwise we will call the police if someone we don't know shows up unexpectedly.
Clients often like to schedule maintenance people, contractors and gardeners during their trip. Sometimes housekeepers are asked to keep a regular schedule or more often to come just before our clients return. In our experience, unless you explicitly tell contracted workers that someone is staying in your home and when you would like them to come, those people show up at whatever date or time of day is convenient for them if they know you are on vacation which can make our job difficult and sometimes embarrassing.
We are extremely cautious about security/privacy.
- All of your information is coded and confidential. Your keys and alarm information are coded so that there is nothing to connect them to you or your address.
- We lock everything by habit so inform us if you have locks you do not want used.
- We do not have guests at your home without permission.
- We do not acknowledge your absence to neighbors, etc. Let us know if there are neighbors you’re comfortable with us talking to.
- We don’t give out information about you unless you ask us to. We never volunteer information.

There Is No Such Thing As "Too Much" Information!
Updates! After the initial consultation do you need any more information? What do you need to know before I leave for a trip?
- Changes:
- We need to know if you’ve changed your locks and if so, we need new keys!
- We need to know if anything has changed regarding the house, your pet’s health, routine or diet.
- Are there any changes at home? Have you moved things? Is there anything unsafe to use or broken that was fine before?
- Health:
- We need to know if your pet’s vaccines are up to date. For dogs: Rabies, DHLPP, and Bordetella. For cats: Rabies (if the cat goes outdoors) and FVRCP. It’s helpful to know what other vaccines your pets may have received and when.
- We need to know about any changes in your pet's health or medical issues (new or pre-existing). If you have changed veterinarians or emergency protocols, let us know.
- Supplies:
- If you don’t leave adequate amounts of food, medications and supplies accessible and in usable condition we will purchase or provide them as we deem needed and charge you accordingly.
- Make sure we know where basic cleaning supplies and the garbage cans are!
- Details:
- Any changes to home security or are their neighborhood issues we should know about?
- Should we be expecting anyone coming in the home or onto the property while you are away?
- You may want to leave your itinerary, flight info and any contact information that pertains to a specific trip!
- Make sure we know when you are leaving and when you return so we can plan our visits accordingly and also so we know when to be concerned if you haven’t called to tell us you’re home again!
Emergencies
What if there is an emergency with my pet?
Hopefully, there will never be a problem with your pet’s health when you are away, but if so we can handle emergencies. If your regular vet is open we will take your pet there. If it is after hours there are a number of good local emergency clinics available.
We will always attempt to reach you before we make any major decisions. If you have an emergency contact you’d trust with such decisions we can call them if you wish. If you cannot be reached we will use our best judgment.
Please inform us in advance if you have a spending cap or limits on the type of treatment you’d approve. It’s a good idea to leave a credit card number or emergency check. You can also let your vet know you’ll be responsible for treatment if your pet needs to be seen.
In the case of an elderly pet or one with health concerns we recommend discussing ahead of time what your wishes might be if that pet should pass away while you’re on vacation. Please ask us if you have questions about what your options might be in this situation.

What if there is a household emergency?
Make sure we have current contact information for you each time you go away as well as local emergency contacts; friends, family, your landlord (if you rent) or perhaps neighbors who are familiar with your house.
Let us know the emergency services numbers for your area. Make sure to give us the location of your fuse/breaker box, emergency shut-off valves and fire extinguisher if you have one. Some clients provide us with information on emergency repair people they prefer to use, a plumber for instance.
